10 Books to read this Fall and Winter

Immersing yourself into a pastime, a forbidden forest or even into the future, a great book can truly take you anywhere. Books take us on an adventure whether that is literal within the parallels of our minds or whether that is emotionally through what the characters we read about endure.

I wouldn't say I’m an expert at reading or a fast reader as a matter of fact. However, reading has become an important hobby for me over the past 5 years, expanding my horizons with new and thrilling genres and captivating my mind to expand upon something other than my own world around me. We all should read, whether that be short stories before bed or an 800 page fantasy book.

Here are some of my favourite books that accompany the fall and winter months soundly. (p.s. don’t worry there are no spoilers)

  1. Patti Smith’s ‘Just Kids’

I truly believe this book changed my perspective on life. Whilst reading this book I endured some of my hardest months. Facing financial challenges, evoking the hard realities about life and money. Patti’s story of her relationship with Robert is a masterpiece of love, friendship and belief. Knowing they were both destined for great things they never gave up on the horizon that shone brightly within their eyes and their willingness to see each others gifts was also beautiful to feel. This book showed me that life isn’t about the material but it’s about who you choose to share your time with and to appreciating the small beauties of just being.

Sometimes the speed of which life excels can be both daunting and stressful. This book is great to wind down after a long day or to fill some perspective into your morning cup of coffee.

2. Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Being very interested in music my whole life and dreaming of becoming a pop-star as a young child, this book filled a space within my heart. A book that gives us the thrill of Rock n Roll but also a love story that will pull on your own heart strings. If you’re looking for a book to spark your heart this cozy season then this book will do just that whilst simultaneously breaking it. An inspiration read and one a book I honestly couldn’t put down.

3. Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

Now this was my first initial taste for fantasy books and I must say it hooked me. I love the balance this book gives between information on the world and characters, the thrill and fear and the love interests within this book. The reviews say that this book is a mix of The Hunger Games and Fifty Shades of Grey. I don’t believe that to be true. I think that statement sells this book short and I see this book as a new and exciting world that we get to discover and explore as well as the characters within it. The trials the character Violet Sorrengail has to face in order to graduate and to become a rider is breath taking and this book brings you on a journey of the horrors, heartache and lust she entails. If you like adventure and romance with a splash of smut then this is an amazing read that is perfect for the gloomy cold nights to come upon us.

If you already love Fourth Wing then check out Iron Flame

4. Coraline by Neil Gaiman

Coraline is a great book to read this spooky season. A short read for the month of October to keep you feeling festive and in the Halloween Spirit. Coraline was first a book before the amazing Laika Studios turned it into the revelation of what it is today. With their 15 year anniversary of the film Coraline and remaking the film in 3D, now is the perfect time to read the book itself. The book is slightly different to the film one of which makes it all more fun to read.

5. The Butchering Art by Lindsey Fitzharris

This incredible book takes us on a journey of the gruesome and gory Victorian era and how medicine was very different to what it is today. This book is great for anyone who’s interested in science and history, or anyone who loves a read that is unsightly and throughly researched. Lindsey tells us the horrifying truths of what medicine use to be like before we knew about germs and how Lister paved the way in bringing medicine to the foreground it stands upon today. A brilliant short read that is well written and thought provoking.

If you’ve read The Butchering Art then check out Lindsey’s, ‘The Facemaker.’

6. Thomas Hardy’s Poems selected Poet to Poet

An amazing way to immerse yourself between the romantic ebbs and flows of these seasons, is to read poetry about it. Thomas Hardy one of our greatest poets knows how to envelope us into a world of nature and to feel the breezes and breaths this earth takes. Poetry is best to connect with all the beauty as well as all the sadness around us and I prompt you to take a further dive into what poetry can provide in your life.

7. Stoner by John Williams

This book is a life story. A quick paced read that has an easy flow, inviting you into the ordinary life of William Stoner. The book is a brilliantly written but sad read. A book though that is never-the-less perfect for the colder months of the year to really settle in to the life of William Stoner.

8. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkien

Nothing is better than reading or watching The Lord of the Rings. The 4th quarter of the year always brings these books to light for me immersing myself back into the creative world of which these book entail. This trilogy brings a great feeling around the autumn months, inspiring Hill walks and your own adventures as the leaves change and fall.

9. The Cinnamon Bun Book Store by Laurie Gilmore

This book has become a little bit of a phenomenon. This book is quite literally spicy, with a story that is romantic and perfect for cozying on up to with your own pumpkin spiced latte this fall. If you love romancing life and the autumn season then buy this book immediately and get reading it before winter time comes around.

10. The Salt Path by Raynor Winn

This is one of those books that is truly inspirational and a true story. Struggling with health issues and financial problems a couple walk along the ‘Salt Path’ and find the truth to life and the new discoveries it holds. A book that will make you want to walk for miles and hold on to the ones you love.

All these books are reflections of brilliant adventures and passages of what life withholds. From past times to new and exciting revelations to new and encapsulating worlds, these books are inspirational and perfect for these colder yet exciting months to come.

Check out these books and let us know if you loved them too.
