Accessing your heart: through sadness, grief or in a time of healing.

My heart has been open and my heart has been solidly shut. Hurt, pain and the promises that were never kept. I’m no leaver to love, I cannot magically sort all life’s problems with my hands or with any intent to clear the negative realm we walk within, but I can live my life with intent to bring a better day to tomorrow.

Lost days can be filled with grief, emptiness and longing for better days to come. The world can be so heavy, fearful and overwhelming. But past days aren’t an everlasting reflection of what your future days are to come.

Life is too difficult to navigate at times and being open and recepting of love can be hard especially when we don’t love and take care of ourselves like we dream. Day to day life can feel mundane if we let it. Here are some small challenges to try and complete to make your day romantic and to allow some light into your heart in times of sadness, grief or in a time of healing.

Buying Flowers:

A simple anecdote to the wonderful beauty that the world withholds or a mere reflection on oneself. What colours do you see, what colour represents how you want to feel. Let your heart choose the flowers that represent you.

Shower away negativity:

Whether it’s a place to cry or a place to restore, water balances the mind, our body and our soul. I saw something about this to do with a full moon and increased my awareness surrounding it. Envisioning the water washing away any negativity that your day has brung or what life is currently enveloping you with, envision it being washed down the drain, not to be seen again. Let the water encapsulate the negative energy and remove this from the surface of your skin. Leave the shower rejoiced and renewed.

The Art Gallery, Cafe or Bookstore Alone:

The Art Gallery, The Cafe and The Bookstore are all wonderful but going alone can make it better. Spend your time shuffling the books between your fingers, find that edition of your favourite book and stare at it a little too long, sip the coffee until the last sip is cold and woefully look at the girl in the painting until your eyes sting with colour. The world is for you so take it in with all that you are, with your time and full attention.

You are the muse - Poetry:

Poetry is a portal to another state of mind, one full of romanticism and one full of glorious words that don’t need to make sense or have any reasoning. You are the avenue of which weaves you many ways. You don’t have to rhyme, you don’t have to really write about something great, it can be something so small or it can be about you. Knowing you, who you are, who you are to be. It can be used to find a way to explain these deep feelings, to sandwich life’s problems into a neat book and to be able to close the chapter on grief or loss. You can choose where it takes you and where you fall away. And when it’s time to make the steps you need to move forward with life whether that be heartbreak, loss, overwhelming feelings of life, depression or anxiety you are the one in control.

Watch a nostalgic movie:

Bringing you back to a time when life was full of innocence. Clustered memories of grass-stained feet and red flushed cheeks. On days of need watching a movie from my childhood never seems to fail me. Knowing every word and the backing track is an invigorating feeling, a hug from the past version of you who watched and loved every moment.

Clean sheets:

Clean sheets to hug you tight. We think about ourselves and our environment last when we’re struggling. Spending most days in bed can be necessary in certain points of your life, however, living in our sheets can create a messy head too. Yes clean your sheets, clean your body and clean the space you’re in. A step that is hard to take when everything seems a mess but a vital step for change and another chance to control our day as we like it.

Read and Escape:

I’ve found reading certain books hard lately and that’s because they’ve been about real life. Real life is sometimes too overwhelming to deal with and being online stimulates that feel evermore with flickering short form content or scrolling words from work laptops. Shut it down, shut off and read a book that takes you somewhere else. Let your mind feel free to believe in something and envision a world that is new and different to the one we live in.

These reflections are just small ways you can look after yourself in trying times. If you did any of these things then be proud of yourself, because it’s not easy to walk a new street and it’s not easy to celebrate every day when today looks a little different then you envisioned.
